PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a synthetic intermediate for a synthetic antimicrobial agent having high safety and excellent antimicrobial activity by synthesizing racemic compound from an inexpensive racemic compound and treating the resultant racemic product with water and an optically active salen complex. SOLUTION: A compound of formula II (R1 through R5 are each H, a halogen, an alkyl or the like) is treated with water and a compound of formula I [M is Co, Co(O2CCH3) or the like] to obtain an optically active compound of formula III. The compound of formula I is used in an amount of 3-10 mol.% and the treatment is carried out in a solvent (for example, tetrahydrofuran) at 5-25 deg.C for 20 hours to 5 days. The amount of the water is preferably 0.55-0.7 equivalent. The treatment gives a synthetic intermediate for excellent antimicrobial agents, for example, levofloxacin or the like. |
