PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make smooth a pressure welding operation for reinforcing bars juxtaposed with a narrow space between and to maintain the reliability of the result of pressure welding, in the operation of butting the reinforcing bars and subjecting them to hat pressure welding by a heat pressure welding device. SOLUTION: An expander main body 1, which is extended in one direction, is provided with a pair of contact parts 3 which come into contact respectively with reinforcing bars adjacent to a reinforcing bar B1 to be pressure welded, while preventing separation of the reinforcing bars, and are spaced from each other slightly wider than the width of a heating part. An expander A of a space between the reinforcing bars thus constituted is slanted to the reinforcing bars, and the contact parts 3, put in a state of straddling the reinforcing bar B1 to be pressure welded, are brought respectively into contact with the peripheral surfaces opposite to the bar B1 of the reinforcing bars positioned on the opposite sides of the bar B1. By rotating the expander main body 1 thereafter until it intersects the reinforcing bars almost perpendicularly, a space between the reinforcing bar B1 to be pressure welded and the reinforcing bars on he opposite sides thereof is expanded so that the heating part of a pressure welding tool can be inserted into the space.
