PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a diamond having an almost spherical or almost ellipsoidal stereostructure in the three-dimensional directions, in diamond formation by a vapor phase synthesis process, which formation is conventionally performed on a planar substrate to form a diamond of a shape having a planar spread, i.e., diamond film. SOLUTION: The diamond formation process using this device comprises: forming chemically active species necessary for diamond formation; introducing the active species into a space on the periphery of a heated fine metal filament 1 covered with a cylindrical filament cover 2 whose upper and lower parts are movable; and forming a diamond having an almost spherical or almost ellipsoidal stereostructure in the three-dimensional directions on the periphery of this metal filament 1 with the filament 1 as the substrate.
