SEARCH METHOD FOR ANTIMICROBIALLY OR HERBICIDALLY ACTIVE COMPOUNDS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently search the substances having antimicrobial and herbicidal activities by searching the substances that inhibits the reactions of proteins having specific enzymatic activity, thus obtain antimicrobials and herbicides. SOLUTION: After the biosynthesis of 1-deoxy-D-xylose 5-phosphate from pyruvic acid and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, substances having antimicrobial activity and/or herbicidal activity are searched by searching the substances that inhibit the reaction of the protein having the activity of an enzyme on the nonmevalonate pathway for the biosynthesis of isopentenyl pyrophosphate via the biosynthesis of 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate. In a preferred embodiment, this protein is (A) a protein catalyzing the reaction that forms 1-deoxy-D- xylose 5-phosphate from pyruvic acid and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate or (B) a protein catalyzing the reaction that forms 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate from 1-deoxy-D-xylose 5-phosphate.
