PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for recovering char from a coal gasifier plant, whereby the apparatus can be reduced in size to attain economical profitability. SOLUTION: Unburnt-matter-containing coarse dusts are removed from the formed gas by means of a cyclone dust collector 7. The recovered dusts in a solid state fall onto the bottom of a candle-type filter pressure vessel 11. The gas which has passed the cyclone 7 is sent through a line 10 to the upper part of the vessel 11, passes the filter 12 to be stripped of fine unburnt-matter- containing dusts, and is discharged from a line 16. Dusts adhering to the filter 12 are backward washed with a high-pressure inert gas from a line 17, fall, and are fed again to the gasifier through a recovery hopper from a line 13. This apparatus has great economical profitability because it can be reduced in size because of the necessity for fewer recovery hoppers and because of the possibility of using a non-pressure-resistant structure cyclone in the pressure vessel.
