PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To meet both a transmitting type and a reflecting type label continuous bodies by setting light-receiving elements for receiving light projected from a light-emitting element to positions opposite to each other via the label continuous body and in parallel to the light-emitting element. SOLUTION: A light-emitting element 4a and a light-receiving element 4b are set to a lower mount member 80a, and moreover, a light-receiving element 6 is set to an upper mount member 80b. The light-receiving element 4b is set to the same lower mount member 80a as the light-emitting element 4a. The light-receiving element is set to a position of the mount member spaced by an optional distance from the light-emitting element 4a and in parallel to the light-emitting element. A label continuous body 50 with an identification mark 56 is transferred between the upper and lower mount members 80b and 80a. A slantwise upward irradiation light L2 emitted from the light-emitting element 4a to the label continuous body 50 hits the label continuous body 50, and a reflecting light returning to the lower mount member 80a is received. A malfunction by a type of the used label continuous body can be eliminated.
