PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate biting of foreign materials and to suppress deterioration of an engine combustion state. SOLUTION: This valve characteristic variable device is provided with a variable mechanism 20 varying the rotational phase of an intake cam shaft 10, a hydraulic control valve 60 regulating pressure of hydraulic fluid supplied to the variable mechanism 20 and an electronic control device(ECU) 80 driving and controlling the valve 60. When the ECU 80 decides that the variable mechanism 20 is abnormal, the hydraulic control valve 60 is driven and controlled so as to repeatedly fluctuate the valve position. At this time, the ECU 80 sets the fluctuation width of the valve position of the hydraulic control valve 60 to be a small at first, and when the number of times of fluctuation is more than a prescribed number of times, the fluctuation width is set to be a large.
