PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a pyrimidylalkyl alcohol having optical activity in high asymmetric yield by reacting a specific pyrimidine derivative with a dialkylzinc in the presence of right-handed and left-handed quartz crystals. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is H, a 1-22C alkyl, an alkenyl or an alkynyl) (e.g. 5-pyrimidinecarbaldehyde) is reacted with a compound of formula II (R2 is an alkyl or an alkenyl) (e.g. diisopropylzinc) in the presence of right-handed and left-handed quartz crystals to provide the objective pyrimidylalkyl alcohol of formula II having optical activity (e.g. 5- pyrimidinealkanol). A molar ratio of quartz crystal to the compound of formula I is preferably 0.000001-10,000 (expressed in terms of SiO2) and a molar ratio of the compound of formula II to the compound of formula I is preferably 0.6-10. The above reaction is preferably carried out at 0-25 deg.C under 1 atomic pressure for >=20 hr by using a solvent such as toluene.
