Polymers obtained by aqueous-phase polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monofunctional monomers and di- or poly-functional monomers in presence of a special polyester-polyol, polyurethane and/or polyacrylate, followed by reaction with a crosslinker. Polymer in aqueous dispersion, obtained by polymerisation in aqueous phase of a mixture of (i) 50-98 wt% monofunctional ethylenic compound(s) (ME) and (ii) 2-50 wt% di- or poly-functional ethylenic compound(s) (D/PE) in presence of (A) a polyesterpolyol (PESPOL) with a number-average mol. wt. (Mn) of 500-10000, an acid number of 22-224 and an OH number of 60-400, (B) a polyurethane (PU) with an Mn of 500-20000, an acid no. of 25-150 and an OH no. of 50-350 containing on average at least one free carboxyl group derived from a PESPOL and/or (C) a polyacrylate (PA) with an Mn of 2000-100000, an acid number of 25-300 and an OH number of 50-250, followed by reaction with a crosslinker (XL). An Independent claim is also included for polymers obtained by polymerisation of ME (only) in presence of (A), (B) and/or (C) as above, followed by reaction with XL.
