In an electrolytic process to generate hydrogen, the electrolysis gas generator unit has a bank of hollow micro-fibres (1) each holding a charge of the electrolyte. The fibre inner walls each have a separate anode (2) and cathode (3). A second essentially identical electrolyte is located outside the hollow fibres and washes the fibre outer walls. Preferred Features: An electrical potential difference is applied to the two electrodes (2, 3). The electrolytic fluid is filtered water maintained at below 95 deg C. The micro-fibres are arranged in small frames and assembled into banks generating hydrogen.
