The device is for locking the engine bonnet of a motor vehicle and involves the bonnet pivotably held on the vehicle bodywork body and pivotable between an outwardly open position and a closed position in which it is held in a bodywork body rabbet. A lock stirrup (1) is held on the bonnet, which engages in a rotary drop lock fixed to the bodywork body in the closed position and through oppositely rotatable first and second levers (2,3) is held in the closed position. A Bowden (RTM) cable (9) engages on the second lever, through the operation of which the second lever is adjustable into an unlocking position. The first lever releases the lock stirrup, moving it out of the closed position, using an opening spring (10) winch is tensioned on closing.
