A novel protein having an amidase activity of stereoselectively hydrolyzing alpha -amino acid amides and alpha -hydroxy acid amides, and a gene encoding this protein. Namely, (a) a protein containing the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:1, or (b) a protein containing an amino acid sequence derived from the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:1 by deletion, substitution or addition of one or more amino acids and having an amidase activity of stereoselectively hydrolyzing alpha -amino acid amides and alpha -hydroxy acid amides. Thus, a microorganism having a number of amidase genes cloned via gene recombination techniques in it cells and, therefore, having a remarkably elevated catalytic capability can be provided, compared with the conventional methods. As a result, optically active alpha -amino acid amides and alpha -hydroxy acid amides can be effectively produced from alpha -amino acid amides and alpha -hydroxy acid amides. |
