Water descends through a cavity between timbers forming a sub-surface barrier within a narrow trench. The barrier is a cavity wall lowered or driven into the soil close to the source of the pollution and standing in the way of ground water movement. The cavity is closed at the base and filled with an absorbent which binds or reacts with the pollutant in question. The cavity base wall is then removed. The cavity wall timbers are lifted clear, allowing the absorbent agent to occupy the resulting space, while additional agent is released into the trench with our without pressure. The sub-surface barrier may be extended using additional sections placed end-to-end with the first. An Independent claim is included for a process to regenerate the sub-surface water filter.
