A human hematopoietic stem/precursor cell (hHSPC) polypeptide (called C17 polypeptide), as well as DNA (and RNA) encoding such polypeptide, are disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for utilizing the polynucleotides and polypeptides disclosed herein, including as markers for chromosomal mapping, DNA fingerprinting and the possible role played by genetic mutations in the disease process, and for the generation of polyclonal sera or monoclonal antibodies specific for said polypeptides. Also disclosed is a method for increasing the rate of multiplication of hMSCs utilizing the polypeptide of the invention.
