The groove making machine has a shaft (21) carrying the grooving cutter (23) fixed to it. The workpiece (15) is clamped in a workpiece holder (13) which can be moved periodically transversely to the direction of movement of the shaft. Grooves (17, 18) are produced in the workpiece by synchronized and phase-offset movements of the workpiece holder and the shaft.
