Polymers obtained by multi-stage, aqueous-phase polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in presence of a special polyester-polyol, polyurethane and/or polyacrylate, followed by reaction with a crosslinker. Aqueous polymer dispersion obtained by multi-stage polymerisation involving (a) aqueous-phase polymerisation of a mixture of (i) 7.5-93 wt% monofunctional ethylenic compound(s) (ME) and (ii) 0.3-47.5 wt% di- or poly-functional ethylenic compound(s) (D/PE) in presence of (A) a polyesterpolyol (PESPOL) with a number-average mol. wt. (Mn) of 500-10000, an acid number of 22-224 and an OH number of 60-400, (B) a polyurethane (PU) with an Mn of 500-20000, an acid no. of 25-150 and an OH no. of 50-350 containing on average at least one free carboxyl group derived from a PESPOL and/or (C) a polyacrylate (PA) with an Mn of 2000-100000, an acid number of 25-300 and an OH number of 50-250 and (b) reaction of the product with (iii) 5-85 wt% mono-functional ethylenic compound(s) (ME), followed by reaction with a crosslinker (XL). Independent claims are also included for (a) polymers obtained by polymerisation of 15-95 wt% ME in presence of (A), (B) and/or (C) as above, reaction of the product with 2.5-8.3 wt% ME and 0.1-42.5 wt% D/PE, and reaction with XL; (b) polymers obtained by polymerisation of monomer mixture (i + ii) as above in presence of (A), (B) and/or (C), reaction of the product with 2.5-83 wt% ME and 0.1-42.5 wt% D/PE, and reaction with XL; (c) polymers obtained by polymerisation of 15-95 wt% ME in presence of (A), (B) and/or (C), reaction with 5-85 wt% ME, and reaction with XL.
