The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for screening divers e arrays of materials for bioactive compounds. In particular, techniques for rapidly characterizing compounds in arrays of materials in order to discover and/or optimize new materials with specific desired properties are provided. The figure represents one of the embodiments of the current invention method for isolating bioactive compounds from a complex mixture of proteins using a n immobilized combinatorial library.
