Mechanism for distribution of a vacuum force to separate parts of a sheet holding down assembly has a number of chambers arranged beneath an outer surface with each chamber having a membrane to divide it into outer surface and vacuum spaces. When a triggering connection is covered by a sheet of paper a vacuum is applied to the vacuum chamber. The system can be used with plane or curved supports. Independent claims are made for an inkjet printer using the holding down mechanism and a procedure for transporting and holding down single sheets in an inkjet type single sheet printer.
