A data recording/reproducing device has a stream attribute judging means (101) for judging whether or not an audio data stream supplied from outside is compressed one, as shown in the figure. A compression identification flag Fco having a value corresponding to the judgment result is added to the audio data steram, and the resultant stream is recorded in a stream recording section (100b). Therefore, after a compressed audio data stream supplied from outside is read out of the stream recording section, an electronic watermark can be inserted in the data stream. Hence, the time taken to write a compressed audio data stream in the stream recording section is short, and degradation of the quality of sound of the analog audio data generated by reproducing the data stream is prevented.
