The invention relates to an automatic cleaning device for windows and such like, comprising a cleaning head (1) which is held by a support device (6) which guides the cleaning head line-by-line across the surface (3) to be cleaned. To permit effective cleaning the cleaning head (1) has to be pressed against the surface (3) to be cleaned at a constant pressure. To this end a rear housing collar of the cleaning head (1) is situated in a guide sleeve (4) which is suspended on the support device (6) by means of a vibrating parallelogram suspension. A force-sensing device, for example a spring, is held between the support device (6) and the parallelogram suspension and deflects the parallelogram suspension by a defined angle in relation to the surface (3) to be cleaned. When the cleaning head (1) is advanced in relation to the guide sleeve (4) and reaches the surface (3) to be cleaned the motor (13) continues to operate and in so doing pushes the parallelogram suspension and the guide sleeve (4) backwards until the swivel angle detected by a sensor (10) indicates that the required contact pressure has been achieved.
