In an animation mode, still picture data discretely captured by imaging or from a storage medium is compressed by the LZW method adopted as a processing of reducing the number of colors. The compressed data is connected in time series into a GIF file format, thereby converting it to an animation GIF file that can be displayed in correlation with the time axis. When an instruction to end the animation mode is given, or when the size of the file reaches the limit of writable capacity of an external storage medium (8), the data of GIF file format is written on the external storage medium (8). It is possible to record a still picture created by imaging on the external storage medium (8), and then make an animation. It is also possible to create an animation GIF file from still pictures recorded on the external storage medium (8) and edit a created animation GIF file.
