The following are claimed: (1) a process for separating a mixture of trans-4-aminocyclohexanol (I) and cis-4-aminocyclohexanol (II) having a (I):(II) ratio of at least 1:1, comprising adding sufficient KOH or NaOH to an aqueous solution of the mixture to lower the freezing point of the solution to "at least" -5 deg C and cooling the solution to crystallise (I); (2) a process for producing (I), comprising (a) hydrogenating p-acetamidophenol (III) to give a product with a trans/cis ratio of at least 1:1, (b) separating the hydrogenation catalyst and saponifying the reaction mixture in an alkaline medium, and (c) cooling the reaction mixture to precipitate (I). |
