PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the damping characteristic of the spring of a shape measuring probe which is constituted by only using the spring without using any viscous fluid, so that the probe may quickly converge vibrations when the vibrations occur or may prevent the occurrence of vibrations. SOLUTION: In a tracer type shape measuring instrument which is provided with a tracer 2, a spring mechanism attached to the tracer 2, and a means (displacement gauge) 3 for detecting the deformation of a spring 9 and fixes its measuring pressure by controlling the distance between the tracer 2 and a surface to be measured, the damping property of the spring 9 is improved by adhering a material which is different from that of the spring 9. Consequently, the measuring instrument can quickly converge vibrations when the vibrations occur and, when the measuring instrument is used for measuring the shape of a slope, the occurrence of vibrations can be prevented by limiting the scanning direction of the tracer 2 in the upward direction of the slope. In addition, the occurrence of vibrations can also be prevented when a lubricant is interposed between the tracer 2 and surface to be measured.
