<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject agent useful as a prophylactic or therapeutic agent for neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS) by including a specific cyclohexenone long-chain alcohol compound. SOLUTION: This agent contains a compound of formula I (R1 to R3 are each H or methyl; X is a 10-28C alkylene or alkenylene) [e.g. 3-(10- hydroxydecyl)-2-cyclohexen-1-one]. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by the following process: a benzenesulfinic acid salt is reacted with cyclohexenone in the presence of an acid to form a compound of formula II which is then reacted with ethylene glycol to form the corresponding ketal modification which, in turn, is reacted with anω-halogenoalkanol to form a compound of formula III which is then treated with an acid to eliminate the protective group. The compound of formula I can be administered in any mode, orally or parenterally, its daily dose being normally 0.01-1,000 mg, pref. 0.1-100 mg per adult, either singly or in two to four portions.</p> |
