PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enlarge an opening dimension of a chuck unit without enlarging the chuck unit itself. SOLUTION: In this chuck unit, a rod 15 formed with racks 15r on both sides thereof moves in an axial direction to turn a first pinion 16 and a second pinion 17 placed at both sides of the rod 15, and the turning movement of each pinion 16, 17 is transmitted to racks 22r, 24r of corresponding first chuck claw 22 and second chuck claw 24. The first chuck claw 22 and the second chuck claw 24 are placed with being offset in a direction of thickness of the pinions 16, 17 so as not to interfere with each other, and the first pinion 16 and the second pinion 17 are composed so as not to interfere with the second chuck claw 24 and the first chuck claw 22, respectively.
