PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a manufacturing method for a separator for a battery applying sulfonation treatment, not causing carbonization and degradation of nonwoven fabric, and degradation of mechanical strength. SOLUTION: In this manufacturing method for a separator for a battery, sulfonation treatment is applied to a nonwoven fabric by use of a complex of sulfur trioxide and an electron donor compound. Preferably, fiber constituting the nonwoven fabric contains at least one substituent selected among a hydroxyl group, a carbonyl group, a carboxyl group, a vinyl group and a phenyl group. For the purpose of easy occurrence of a sulfonation reaction, corona discharge treatment can be applied to the nonwoven fabric before the sulfonation treatment, or active light rays can be irradiated on the nonwoven fabric in the sulfonation treatment.
