PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To subject empty cans, plastic containers, etc., to a sorting or compression volume reduction treatment. SOLUTION: This apparatus is provided with a transporting conveyor 7 for transporting the empty cans, empty bottles and waste plastic containers. The steel cans among the empty cans transported by the transporting conveyor 7 are attracted and recovered by magnetic force by means of a steel can sorting machine 16. The aluminum cans are sorted and recovered by an aluminum can sorting machine 20. The empty bottles and the waste plastic containers are sorted by blasting generated by a blower 22. The sorted steel cans, aluminum cans, empty bottles and waste plastic containers are respectively recovered in recovering boxes 17, 21, 23 and 24. The recovered steel cans, aluminum cans and waste plastic containers are respectively discretely fed into a press machine 30 by a feed conveyor and are subjected to volume reduction compression. The press machine is constructed as the press machine for common use for the empty cans and the waste plastic containers by disposing needles 46 for piercing the waste plastic containers retractably in a press hopper 37.
