PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve satisfactory stratified charge combustion through reliable ignition and combustion of all injected fuel as a burnable mixture, by injecting fuel from a fuel injection valve in a thin fan shape and preventing the fuel from spreading laterally with a guide wall, when advancing on a bottom wall within a cavity. SOLUTION: A fuel injection valve 7 is provided with a slit-like nozzle hole that injects fuel in a thin fan shape. For stratified charge combustion, fuel is injected inside a cavity 8 on the top surface of a piston 5, during the last period of a compression stroke. The injected fuel 10 advances across a bottom wall 8a of the cavity 8 and evaporates by the time it is guided by a one-side wall 8b near an ignition plug 6, the become a burnable air-fuel mixture with excellent ignition performance. In this case, a guide wall 8d is provided to prevent the fuel from spreading laterally, while advancing across the bottom wall 8a. The guide wall 8d is composed of two flat vertical sidewalls extending to form a predetermined angle, with a distance between both the sidewalls being set greater than the injection width of the fuel.
