PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce proper colors in either case, when the device is used as a reflection type or a transmission type by forming a color filter layer on a reflection film and on a substrate in a transmission region and controlling the thickness of the color filter layer in a reflection region to be smaller than the color filter layer of the similar color in the transmission region. SOLUTION: A substrate 1 and a counter substrate 2 are disposed at a required distance, and a liquid crystal layer 3 filled with a guest-host liquid crystal containing a dichroic dye is formed in the gap. Each pixel 11 on the substrate 1 is composed of a reflection region 11b, where a reflection film 5 is formed and a transmission region 11a where the reflection film 5 is not formed. Furthermore, a color filter layer 6 (or 7, 8) is formed on the reflection film 5 in the reflection region 11b and on the substrate 1 in the transmission region 11a. The color filter layers 6, 7, 8 have red, green and blue colors, respectively, By controlling the thickness of the color filter layer in the reflection region 11b to be a half of the thickness in the transmission region 11a, the optical density in the reflection region 11b is set to a half of that in the transmission region 11a.
