PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine influences of an external noise in accordance with characteristics intrinsic to a magnetic pattern such as an MICR character or the like, and give an accurate warning of occurrence of abnormal condition in the magnetic pattern. SOLUTION: This apparatus includes a transportation mechanism 4 for relatively moving a recording medium 1 and a magnetic head 3, an amplitude detector 5 for measuring an amplitude of an electrical signal that has been output from the magnetic head 3, a first controller 6 for relatively moving the magnetic head 3 and a magnetic pattern 2 and obtaining a first measurement result by the amplitude detector 5 from an electrical signal that is provided based on the magnetic pattern, a second controller 7 for obtaining a second measurement result from the amplitude detector 5 when the magnetic head 3 is not outputting any electrical signal based on the magnetic pattern 2, a comparator 8 for comparing the first and second measurement results with each other, and a reporter 9 for providing a predetermined output when the second measurement result exceeds a predetermined value in the relationship with the first measurement result based on the comparison result. |
