PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rightly determine data appearing again in a radar detection area as forward vehicle data even if the data appear after data are temporarily dissipated when a file makes a small turn and a forward vehicle moves out of the radar detection area. SOLUTION: In this method, the positions determined as the newest forward vehicle data during travel are stored, and after the forward vehicle data are dissipated, a representative value which is within a predetermined angle about a stored position as seen from the position of a following vehicle and which is within a predetermined distance from the position of the following vehicle is selected from subsequently calculated representative values and is determined as forward vehicle data (step 11, 12).
