PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a range finder which can make the time needed for a focusing operation to irreducibly minimum, according to the focusing accuracy needed for itself. SOLUTION: This range finder has photoelectric converting elements S1 to S4, which photoelectrically convert an optical image of an object to be focused and is equipped with a couple of sensor arrays 11 which are arranged at a distance of specific base line length, an arithmetic circuit which calculates the distance to the object according to a relation of the relative position of electric charge distributions on the photoelectric converting elements S1 to S4 between the sensor arrays 11, so as to cause variation parts SH1 and SH2 to vary apparent array pitches of the photoelectric converting elements S1 to S4, and a control circuit which controls the variation parts so that the apparent array pitches of the photoelectric converting elements S1 to S4 are varied according to the requested focusing accuracy. |
