PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment layer with superior characteristics, even if it is hardened at a temperature as low as 200 deg.C or lower. a resin composition useful for it and substrates to hold a liquid crystal in between suppressing alignment defect while film thickening of the liquid crystal alignment layer causes to alleviate projecting and recessing due to TFT elements, comb-shaped electrodes or the like, and a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The resin composition for a liquid crystal alignment layer comprises a resin composition containing a polyamide acid, obtained by reacting a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride containing 10-70 mol% tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride expressed by general formula (I) (where in the formula, (n) expresses an integer of 2-20) with a diamine compound. The liquid crystal alignment layers are produced by rubbing polyimide layers, formed on surfaces of substrates, on which electrodes are formed. The substrates to hold a liquid crystal in between are formed by forming the liquid crystal alignment layers, and the liquid crystal display device is provided with the substrates to hold the liquid crystal in between. |
