SURFACE COATING AGENT AND PRODUCTION OF COATED PAPER USING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface coating agent for papermaking having excellent ink jet suitability to a PPC paper or a paper for ink jet when used as the surface coating agent, and to provide a method for producing a coated paper. SOLUTION: The characteristic of this surface coating agent is to comprise a copolymer obtained by carrying out an emulsion polymerization of monomers containing (C) at least a hydrophobic monomer in the presence of [I] an alkali neutralized material prepared by neutralizing a solution containing a copolymer having (A) a hydrophobic monomer containing styrene and α-methylstyrene and (B) a carboxyl group-containing anionic monomer as monomer units and obtained by conducting an emulsion polymerization in the presence of a low- molecular surfactant.
