PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing heat exchanging performance from declining in a pre-cooler for an air-breathing engine. SOLUTION: A heat exchanger tube 2 is arranged inside a pre-cooler 1, and liquid hydrogen 12 is provided in this heat exchanger tube 2 as a cooling medium. Air 11 is fed into the pre-cooler 1 via a duct 3, and after cooling, and is sent to a compressor of the air-breathing engine. Ethanol 13 is mixed in with the air inside the duct 3 via a nozzle 4 provided midway therein. The ethanol 13 is carried into the pre-cooler 1 and condenses on the surface of the heat exchanger tube 2 along with water vapor. Here, the formed layer of frost has fewer air gaps, smaller heat resistance, and is thinner compared with the layer of frost formed in the case when water vapor alone condenses. This enables heat exchange ability of the heat exchanger tube 2 to be prevented from declining, when frost adheres thereto.
