PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the manufacture of a contact type magnetic head which can expose a magnetic pole tip in a short time without using any special device and the manufacture of a contact magnetic head which can easily equalize the heights of a magnetic pad and an auxiliary pad when the magnetic head is equipped with the auxiliary pad. SOLUTION: A separate layer 14 is formed on a substrate 12 and an element layer 16 which includes multiple head elements is formed on the separate layer 14 to form an element plate 10. After a hard film 20 is formed on the top surface of the element layer 16 where a magnetic pole 18 is formed, the surface of the hard film 20 is lapped in the state of the element plate 10 to expose the tip of the magnetic pole 18 almost completely. Further, the tip of the magnetic pole is covered with a magnetic pole protection film 30, an unnecessary part of the hard film 20 is removed to form the magnetic pole pad 54 and auxiliary pad 56, and then the head elements included in the element layer 16 are separated and disconnected from the element plate 10 to obtain contact type magnetic heads 50.
