PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and a light quantity control method therefore, with which a film is effectively protected and lightness is secured with sufficient quantity of light. SOLUTION: An image on a film 15 is read. The quantity of illumination light for radiating the film 15 from an illumination system is controlled corresponding to the operating mode of the device, so as to reach degradation temperature on the surface for that film. In a state where no operating instruction is issued to the device for the prescribed time, the quantity of illumination light is quenched into prescribed quantity of light before reaching the degradation temperature on the film surface. Degradation caused by burning can be surely prevented and by securing a proper light quantity at reading, a screen which is bright and easy to view can be observed.
