PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve detection accuracy when detecting the position of an original image from a read image by discriminating the position of an image recording part on a recording medium through the use of a prescribed variable threshold. SOLUTION: An entry means 28 or a host 20 gives a scanning instruction to the reader to set a scan mode. A CPU 22 writes image data corresponding to one line written in a line memory 24 to an image memory 27 by designating a write address. Then the CPU 22 writes data to the image memory 27 one after another, while changing the write address by feeding image data by one line at a prescribed interval for a prescribed number of times to the image memory 27, and a transmission section 26 transmits the image data stored in this image memory 27 to the host 20. An image position detection section 25 detects the position of the image when writing the image data in the line memory 24 to the image memory 27.
