PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform autofocusing with an image reader in a simple configuration and to improve the image quality of a read image. SOLUTION: This image reader reads image information in a microfilm, projected on a projecting screen 19 by a projecting lens by arranging a read sensor 20 in the optical path of that projection freely movably in the subscanning direction. In this case, a designated area S for reading the image information is set on the projecting screen and inside a designated area S, sampling is performed for auto focusing by the reading sensor 20. Since it is not necessary to separately provide an AF sensor, the configuration of this device and a controller can be simplified, and focusing can be surely performed inside the designated area S.
