PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of realizing extremely efficient and moreover proper scanning. SOLUTION: In the case of continuously reading images prescribed times, at prescan or at an area where there is no need to perform scanning between a home position(HP) and a prescan starting position, a read unit 20 and a light shielding member 25 are respectively moved at a fixed maximum speed independently of set resolution, and even when returning the light shielding member 25 to the HP after reading, the relevant light shielding member 25 is moved at the fixed maximum speed. Furthermore, when a scanning instruction is received in the case of returning the reading unit 20 to an HP 111 after the reading unit 20 performs main scan succeedingly to prescan, the light shielding member 25 will not return to the HP 111 but will move to the start position of the prescan.
