PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for increasing a conversion speed of a successive approximation A/D converter ADC by using a signal to drive components for deciding successive approximation bits on the basis of a time required for each bit decision and not on the basis of a prescribed time interval assigned to each bit decision. SOLUTION: A successive approximation A/D converter 110 uses comparators 112, 114 connected in opposite polarity to each other and logic circuits 132, 126, 142 to generate a signal through bit decision. This signal resets the comparators 112, 114 to latch the decided bit and to decide succeeding bits and is used to start decision of succeeding bits when succeeding bits are to be decided. The A/D converter 110 can be configured as a single ended, a differential or a complementary circuit.
