PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more freely and properly generate thumbnail pictures by utilizing an optional picture for a thumbnail picture of a main picture. SOLUTION: A 1st CPU (CPU#1) 25 uses a thumbnail generating function section 265 to generate thumbnail picture data. In this case there are two generating modes of thumbnail picture data; a 'usual mode' where the thumbnail picture data are generated from the main picture data obtained by photographing the main picture and a 'thumbnail photographing mode' where only a thumbnail picture is photographed separately from photographing of the main picture and the thumbnail picture data are generated from the photographing of the thumbnail picture. An optional thumbnail picture is generated from a photographed image separately from the main picture by using the 'thumbnail picture photographing mode' and the thumbnail picture is recorded on a recording medium 24 in cross reference with the main picture.
