PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To add a picture with reduced resolution to a file of a digital file form for pictures with individual resolution by forming a multi-form picture file in combina tion with digital image signals and signals denoting reduced resolution. SOLUTION: A control processing unit 20 comprehensively controls an input section of a camera. When an image buffer 18 stores a certain number of digital image signals once, a digital signal processing unit 22 receives the stored signals and controls a compression and recording section of the camera. The digital signal processing unit 22 applies a compression algorithm to the digital image signals and gives the compressed signals to a memory card 24 that is removable by using a connector 26. Furthermore, the digital signal processing unit 22 generates pictures with reduced resolution, that is 'thumbnail' pictures from original pictures in addition to the compressed pictures with full resolution and outputs the pictures with reduced resolution together with the compressed pictures to the memory card 24 as a multi-form image file. Then the memory card 24 outputs the 'thumbnail' pictures to a display section 30 on request from the processing unit 20.
