PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exchange having a telephone exchange function mainly employing a hardware processing by using an isochronous channel that is a real time communication channel. SOLUTION: The exchange system includes a gateway node connected to an ISDN and a PSTN or the like, one, two or more extension nodes 201, and an IEEE 1394 bus 301. The functions of the gateway node 700 reside, first, in mutual conversion of data transfer rates of an external line and an extension to form a speech channel providing a seamless speech, second, in reservation of an isochronous channel as a speech channel in response to a request from the external line or the extension, and third, in line switching such as transfer and holding in response to a request from the external line or the extension. A resource manager 401 generates a management table to manage the extension nodes 201 and the gateway node 700.
