<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain a large modulation degree in a surface plasmon optical modulating device. SOLUTION: This surface plasmon optical modulating device consists of a dielectric block 11 disposed in such a manner that the light 10 to be modulated transmits the block to enter the face 11a at a total reflection angle, a metal film 12, an optical functional film 13 which is formed on the metal film 12 and which changes its refractive index by irradiation of light, and a driving light source 15 to irradiate the optical functional film 13 with modulation driving light 14. In this device, a dielectric layer 20 having the lower refractive index than that of the dielectric block 11 is formed between the dielectric block 11 and the metal film 12.</p> |
