PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute V.34 communication through a private branch exchange without problem by preventing the PBX from performing band compression by sending an identification signal capable of recognizing facsimile communication at the time of call origination. SOLUTION: A modem 9 of a digital compound machine on a caller side sends out an identification signal (CED signal) capable of recognizing facsimile communication at the time of call origination and call termination. From this CED signal, each private branch exchange in each office judges that communication is facsimile communication and does not perform band compression. When the facsimile equipment in the office on a caller side is equipment having a V.34 communication function, in response to call incoming, a procedure V.8 is started and an ANSam signal is sent out. When this ANSam signal is received, the digital compound machine on the caller side executes the V.8 procedure as the procedure of fully duplex communication and afterwards, the procedure of V.34 and the transmission of image signals based on V.34 are performed.
