PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and display material in which a photochromic compd. can be used as a coloring material without forming a cell for the display material, thermal recording and reversible display are possible, and an image of high picture quality with high sharpness can be formed. SOLUTION: The recording and display layer contains microcapsules consisting of a wall material which encapsulate a color developing or color changing component and which changes its electric conductivity by stimulation. The electric conductivity may be either ionic conductivity or electron conductivity, and stimulation is thermally performed. The color developing or color changing component is preferably a compd. showing electrochromism. In a practical constitution, the recording and display material 10 is produced by successively forming a conductive layer 14, a recording and display layer 16 and a transparent conductive layer 18 on a supporting body 12.
