Location and detaching of the end of a wound back yarn at a cop, has a controlled swing drive for the locating blades to release and mark a cop with a failed yarn release to be diverted at the next station. The apparatus to detach the end of yarn, wound back on a cop, has locating blades (31,47) with swing drives (23,36) which are operated by a control (16) so that the blades (31,47) are retracted after they have been in contact with the surface of the rotating cop (3) for a given time span. Sensors (34,43) register the detaching movements of the blades (31,47) from the cop (3). When the movement of the blade (31,47) is blocked significantly, by a hooked yarn (4), the control (16) gives the cop (3) a rotation in the unwinding direction before it is released for further onwards movement. The control (16) is structured to release the cop (3) after a given time span of rotation in the unwinding direction. The cop (3) release is controlled when the sensor (34,43) registers the release of the blade (31,47) from the cop (3). The control (16) identifies the cop, for further processing stations downstream in the transport path. Where the yarn (4) has not been detected and detached, the cop (3) is deflected into a lock at the next station.
