The invention relates to nucleic acids and to protein sequences derived from said nucleic acids which possess functions that are essential to the surviva l of Escherichia coli. The invention also relates to vectors and host cells th at have been transformed with these vectors for expressing essential proteins o f the type described above and to proteins produced with these vectors. Finall y, the invention also relates to the use of the proteins produced with these vectors in screening methods for identifying antibacterial substances and to the antibacterial substances found with these proteins.
