A device (10) for removing bubbles from blood comprising: an elongate bubble trap body (12) having an interior wall (16) and exterior wall (14); said body (12) having a longitudinal axis (28); a primary blood inlet (22) and a primary blood outlet (24); a radial acceleration section (44) located between said inlet port (22) and said outlet (24); said radial acceleration section (44) having a blade (20) coupled to a center body extending between said center body and said interior wall (16), forming at least one helical cannel connecting said primary blood inlet (22) to said primary blood outlet (24), for receiving blood from said inlet (22) and impart rotary motion to the blood flow; said acceleration section (44) having a nominal outer diameter D; said primary outlet (24) located downstream of said acceleration section (44); said secondary blood outlet (26) located at a distance length L in the direction of blood flow downstream from said separation section; said secondary outlet (26) positioned at a distance L from said separation section and being upstream of said primary outlet (24) where L is at least three times D the outer diameter of the acceleration section (44).
